new year's resolutions + being happier newsletter

new year's resolutions + being happier

Happy Last Day of February!

It's that time of year my friend when we dare to ask ourselves that terrible question ... 'Have I been keeping up with my New Year's resolutions?' Tough question, I know!

Have you started the year with a bang and are still hitting those resolutions hard?

Or, are you now thinking about those resolutions onlywhen you notice you're not following through with them?

Either is fine! There is no wrong answer and certainly no judgement here!

But ...

How are you treating yourself if you have slacked off?

In this drop, I'll give you some reasons to treat yourself well + how to do that!

Best,
~Kimberly x

01.

new year's resolutions

The New Year's resolution has to be the single most insidious idea ... ever!

They are usually very ambitious goals like 'getting into the best shape of my life', 'quitting my bad habit (smoking, drinking, over-eating)' or 'making my relationship better'.

And so much is riding on the outcome of these ambitions + so much emotion is attached, there is usually a LOT of pressure too!

I sometimes think the inventor of the New Year's resolution must have gotten paid a lot of money to think of a sly and subtle way to mentally torture others! 😂

It's not really the resolutions that are the problem. It's the way we treat ourselves after we don't achieve them.

And the way we treat ourselves regarding unmet New Year's resolutions is just a carry-over of how we treat ourselves in general. Let's face it. We're pretty consistent in that department!

Which is the point!

If you are honest with yourself, you'd probably admit that you speak negatively or participate in self-sabotaging behavior on the daily!

Now how is that ever going to contribute to your happiness?

If you want to be happier, if you want to start creating the life you are hoping for, treating yourself badly when things don't go your way is the last thing you should ever do!

02.

being happier

The first key to being happier on a daily basis + moving toward creating the life you desire is to treat yourself well, even when things do not go your way ... and dare I say ... especially when things do not go your way!

So, when faced with something undesired, follow these 3 simple steps!

1) Notice when you are beating yourself up ... sooner!

How many minutes, hours or days do you tend to stay in the pattern of negative thoughts about yourself?

The duration matters, don't you agree?

Ok, stuff happens and maybe your self doubt kicks in and you start talking negatively to yourself about your own worth! That could happen as quickly as 1 second between stimulus and the begining of your narrative.

So, the story has started and the tale of woe is spinning! Not great, but ...

The trick is to NOTICE your negative self talk as soon as you can!!! Why? So that you can STOP it!

Stopping negative thoughts about yourself sooner will make you happier!

2) Move!

And I mean physically move!
~ get up
~ jump up and down

~ shiver and shake

~ dance

~ walk to a new location

~ go outside

~ stop, drop and roll

Do anything physical that comes to mind to get the chemicals that are supporting your negative thoughts to process through your body.

And the movement is enouh to act as a distaction + to start disrupting your negative thoughts!

3) Say something else to yourself!

Tell yourself something ridiculous! For instance, say 'I cannot wait to see a purple elephant with a top hat and cane walk down the street today!'. Say several of these sentences. String sentences together of completely unrelated topics. The more outlandish the better!

Be absurd with these sentences!

This will disrupt the negative thought pattern AND create an entire new train of thought for the mind to follow + try to figure out!

Every time you find yourself in the place where you are engaging in negative self-talk try these 3 actions.

Try something different for yourself! You may be surprised with the results!O IT DIFFEENT
